I set up a blog, put Google ads on it, now, where is my money!?

One of the ongoing myths that is perpetuated around the internet is that it is easy to make bunches of money, and that all you have to do is to set up a blog, put advertising on it, and start raking in the dough! Please consider this blog my contribution to the end of the myth that anyone can make money on the internet, simply by working 5 minutes a day! (It is possible to make money on the internet, and many have made their fortunes, but as with anything else, it takes time and dedication, and I would urge you to ignore anyone that tells you otherwise!) As far as putting Google ads on your website or blog, I would urge you to consider that currently a little under 2% of all ads get clicks and you are unlikely to earn much more than a few pennies from any individual click, so you can do the math yourself as far as to the number of visits that you would have to receive to your site/blog in order to get your first check (Google ad Sense sends your first check when you’ve reached the sum of $10). I would also urge you to consider that as of today no major news sites/blogs have discovered a method by which to make their online properties self sustainable through advertising alone. Almost each week there is news of another media site having spent tons of money redoing their webpage, adding advertising… in order to make the site profitable and almost as often these stories are followed up by the failure of these conglomerates in this venture.
As I have mentioned many times in this blog, blogging is very important to your online image, both for the SEO of your site and for giving your customers a simple way to interact with you directly, but in order to make your blog successful you should concentrate the bulk of your efforts to writing top notch content rather than on Google ads (which, lets face it, only end up making Google billions)

What is directory submission?

Directory submission is one of the more straight forward and direct subjects (pardon the pun) that will be discussed on this blog¸ but it is nonetheless a necessary part of good SEOand so I will take the time to discuss it here.
Directory submission is, as the name would imply, the submission of your site to directories, there are many directories that list all kinds of websites and that attempt to categorize the web and to be included in these you have to simply submit your site. A great thing about the majority of these directories is that they are free, and at most require a reciprocal link, (there are also many paid directories, but I would stay away from these, at least in the beginning
. Directory links can be a great way to get many lower quality backlinks (what is a low quality backlink?) and can help you in getting your site indexed when it is young. The major downside in directory submission is that there are many many directories to which your site can be submitted, there are blog directories, as well as directories for specific types of sites (a directory for local real estate sites) and finding/submitting your site to each of these can be a daunting task, and often, not the best use of your time, plus, since there are hundreds of directories that you really need to be in, likely hood is that if you try to do this on your own you will miss at least a few. My advice, when it comes to directory submissions is for you to use an SEO directory submission service such as that offered by Net LZ or other SEO companies, this can be fairly cost effective and can help you get started.

The World Does Not Begin and End With SEO

by Jennifer Laycock

Ever notice how when someone finds a solution to a problem they're having, it suddenly becomes the solution to everyone else's problem as well? People who love their chiropractor tell you how much seeing one would help your sore back/sinus problem/shin splints/etc. People who have lost and kept weight off with a specific diet suggest how well it will work for you. People who experience success trying a marketing tactic tell you what a difference it will make for your company if you do it too.

j0427673.jpgThis is fine and dandy. It's called word of mouth and it's a very effective way to influence decisions. The problem comes when the love of the solution supersedes the common sense needed to apply it properly. That chiropractor likely isn't going to fix your blocked heart valve and that special diet probably won't heal your broken ankle. In the same way, we need to remember as search engine marketers that just because something can help search results doesn't make it a good mainstream marketing strategy.

I just got my site up, how do I get Google to index it?

First of all please allow me to be the first to congratulate you on getting your site online! It was a lot of work, and you did it, Great job!
One of the first most important steps to getting search engine traffic to your site is to get your site indexed, once the site is indexed it will begin to appear in search engine results and you can start your work on improving your keyword ranks. The way that Google indexes pages is by sending bots, known as crawlers all over the web (please take a look at previous blog post about What is a crawler?) in order for a crawler to find your site/index it you must quickly get as many backlinks to your new site as you can, submit it in directories, get your friends to blog about it, add it to your Facebook, Tweet about it… the important thing is, the more ways there is for a crawler to find your new site the faster your site will get indexed (this process can take months for many new sites).
Another good tool to utilize in your indexing arsenal is an XML sitemap (Google sitemap), a sitemap tells the crawler the location of each of your pages and helps ease the crawling process. (Although a sitemap is only helpful if the crawler is able to find your site and if the sitemap is correctly set up). Another thing, although Google/other search engines allow you to submit your sitemap to them (this is something you should do), this alone will not get you indexed!

Domination Web 2.0 to Web 2.0 Goldmine

Web 2.0 has taken the Internet by storm. Essentially, Web 2.0 marketing is done to improve the natural or "organic" ranking of a website to promote traffic to a site rather than paid advertising. This method is done by getting a large number of "regression" or "crusaders" with other websites and the URL of your own website, or address the increased attention of search engine algorithms. However, it is considered by most to be tedious and time consuming to generate a Web 2.0 campaign to raise large amounts of free cash, ongoing traffic to your website. In short, Web 2.0 is the use of free links to build a wider presence on the Web usually get attention from search engines when they find the URL of your website in hundreds of locations across the Internet.

This is most effectively done through the expression called "backlinking" mentioned above. In essence, is the use of various means of social networking and social news sites through the Internet and the distribution of a large number of links to your own website address. Herein lies the challenge. To send hundreds and hundreds of sites on the Internet can be a daunting proposition for most. Even more daunting of a task is to continue this process of publication, long after the hour, day after day. This is usually done through the publication of articles in blogs or other social networking sites, video posting video sites, and putting up what is called a "lens" on other sites, all of which have their address web page on them.

Effective knowledge of how to implement a Web 2.0 campaign can also be quite difficult to learn because there are so many sites and techniques available to the promoters of the website. What is needed is an effective educational tool that helps the average business person understand the concepts of Web 2.0-and then outlines a complete and comprehensive plan to facilitate implementation of learning. The traffic resulting from learning the concepts of Web 2.0 can be very rewarding for any business. The world is changing, and any business that does not exploit these risks concepts behind. A review of economic resources is an electronic book called Web 2.0 gold mine. This ebook guides you through basic to advanced techniques and tools to implement a comprehensive Web 2.0 campaign for any company that has a website with ease, but instead of boring messages from one site at a time. The best feature of this material is the delivery of a comprehensive step by step plan to implement your Web 2.0 marketing program.

What does SEO have to do with Buddhism?

I realize that many might find the title of this blog post odd, and I want to apologize in advance to anyone who practices Buddhism and who might be offended by the analogy that I will make here, but I thought that this was an apt observation and I wanted to share it.
In Buddhism there is an old parable the moral of which states that a man can take many different roads to achieve nirvana, and although few men are likely to travel the same path, many are likely to end up in the same place. The same might be said for SEO, there are many different ways to achieve success with your search engine optimization strategy, you can choose to follow any of these paths, but as long as your path is just (you have a good website, and you follow the rules set up for SEO) and as long you are willing to make a commitment to the Path for the proper amount of time (you are interested improving your site over the long term and are willing to commit to SEO for years rather than months) you will succeed in making your site great and you will see tremendous results from your efforts.
